Line 5 in Northern Wisconsin
Line 5 is a vital link to propane and other energy supplies for the upper Midwest. Every day, this 645-mile-long, 30-inch diameter pipeline plays a critical role transporting 540,000 barrels of light crude oil, light synthetic crude oil, and natural gas liquids to a regional network for this area.
The product moved on Line 5 is used to produce transportation fuels and fuels to heat homes, schools and businesses and fuel industry in Wisconsin, the larger Midwest region, and Eastern Canada. Line 5 has been safely operating across northern Wisconsin since 1953.
Line 5 through the Bad River Reservation
Enbridge was disappointed by legal action taken in July 2019 by the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians to remove the pipeline from its Reservation, after nearly seven years of good-faith negotiations and formal mediation.
In response to the Bad River Band's request to relocate Line 5, Enbridge has been studying possible re-route options for a 12-mile segment of Line 5. Enbridge remains committed to continued dialogue with Bad River leadership; however, the company has an obligation to provide uninterrupted service to its customers and is therefore moving forward with a reroute of Line 5.

Line 5 Pipeline Safety
Safety is our top priority. We remain in near daily communication with Bad River staff to maintain the safe and reliable operation of the pipeline. We’re pleased that the Band is committed to continuing to work with us on Line 5 operations and maintenance activities.
Data from the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration confirms that there have been no spills on the Wisconsin portion of the pipeline in the past 15 years. Of the three incidents on Line 5 in Wisconsin, the two most recent, in 1992 and 2002, were located at Enbridge’s Superior Terminal, and were contained within our facility.
