In towns like Floodwood, Enbridge’s presence ‘helps schools fund their very operation’

Pipeline property tax payments ‘are the reason that some of our school districts exist,’ says Minnesota Sen. David Tomassoni

Property tax payments mean money for roads, bridges, transportation and recreation.

And in some cases, they mean much more than that.

“My experience with Enbridge has always been positive—and they actually are the reason that some of our school districts exist,” says Minnesota Sen. David Tomassoni, who’s represented District 6, in the northeastern portion of the state, since 2001.

Sen. Tomassoni testified in support of Enbridge’s proposed Line 3 Replacement Project during recent Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC) hearings, noting that the property tax money Enbridge pays for its Mainline pipeline network in northern Minnesota “helps schools fund their very operation.

“Without that money, those small rural schools—such as Floodwood, Minnesota, for example, population 500—without those pipelines and the property taxes they pay, and the economic impact that they generate, the Floodwood School District would probably not exist,” says Sen. Tomassoni, “and (children) would most likely have to go to school up to 45 minutes to an hour away.”



Enbridge’s proposed Line 3 Replacement Project in the U.S.—a $2.9-billion private investment, with $2.6 billion of that in Minnesota—would create thousands of family-sustaining construction jobs, a ripple effect through economic spinoffs in right-of-way communities, and more long-term property tax revenue.

It would also replace infrastructure under continuous maintenance with the latest available high-strength steel and coating technology, using modern construction methods.

“It’s as much about replacing an old pipeline as it is keeping the trains off the tracks and keeping the trucks off the road,” says Sen. Tomassoni.

In total, the project is expected to yield an estimated 8,600 jobs (6,500 of them local), about $334 million in payroll for workers, and total statewide economic impact of more than $2 billion.

“It’s a very, very big deal, not only for the economic impact that it will have in regards to Minnesota itself, but also to the jobs it will create,” says Sen. Tomassoni.
